Why Visit Mainland Honduras
A visit to the Bay Islands of Honduras highlights the Caribbean beauty we enjoy every day. But visit mainland Honduras to see even more of this geographical gem of a country. From mountains to tropical jungle, from the Caribbean coast to the Pacific coast, Honduras is a natural playground for any outdoor enthusiast.
Beyond the natural beauty of this country, the history is not to be overlooked. Mayan ruins show off what's left of early residences, while the colonial influence continues in some mountain towns. Today, Honduras is filled with friendly people. Do keep in mind any current security or safety concerns - as you would anywhere you travel to in the world.
What to Do in Honduras
Mainland Honduras has countless things to do and see. Some of the most popular locations offer a bit of outdoor adventure, a bit of history, and a convenient transport link onward.
Head to Copan for a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with incredibly maintained Mayan ruins. The quaint mountain village of Copan is just minutes from the site of the ruins and offers visitors a warm welcome. The site of the ruins is well worth a visit, even if you've already visited Tikal or Teotihuacan.
Another popular historical site is Gracias, in the Lempira Department not far from Copan. This colonial town is quiet and tranquil, but carries forward the European influence in Honduras from centuries of colonialism. Just outside of town are some fantastic hiking locations, thermal baths, and even the highest zipline in Central America!
Tegucigalpa is the capital of Honduras. Although not a major tourist stop in itself, the beautiful mountain areas surrounding the city are worthy of a visit. Hiking, cycling, botanical gardens, and stunning vistas await.
La Ceiba is the adventure capital of mainland Honduras. With whitewater rafting, hiking, waterfalls, and the city itself right on the Caribbean coast, there are plenty of ways to stay entertained and active in La Ceiba.
