Gateway to the Bay Islands
Roatan is the largest of the Bay Islands of Honduras, measuring almost 40 miles in length with a landmass of 49 square miles. This lush, tropical island has a mountainous backbone, and is surrounded by the second largest barrier reef in the world. Roatan enjoys extremely comfortable year-round temperatures, averaging 27°C (80°F), and boasts white-sand beaches, lush valleys, low cost of living, a safe environment, and friendly locals.
Roatan is Unique
Life and culture on Roatan are different from mainland Honduras. Although the official language of Honduras is Spanish, because of Roatan’s unique history, English is widely spoken. For 200 years, Spanish conquistadores and British pirates battled for control of these islands, with the English controlling Roatan for many years.
Roatan’s villages highlight the island’s diverse culture. Punta Gorda was the first Garifuna village in Central America, while French Harbour boasted one of the largest fishing fleets in the Caribbean. Tourism has become a major industry on the island, bringing people from all over the world to visit this paradise.
Roatan has several fun annual events that also reflect its culture, including the Garifuna Festival, a Pirate Fair, a Shrimp Festival, and the Roatan Fishing Tournament.
Easy Travel to Roatan
One of the most convenient aspects to Roatan is that the island has amazing air connectivity. Non-stop flights are available from Miami and Dallas on American Airlines; from Atlanta on Delta Airlines; and from Houston on United Airlines. From Canada, you can fly direct from Montreal or Toronto straight to Roatan on both Sunwing and AirTransat. You can also fly direct from San Salvador on Avianca Airlines or from Belize City on Tropic Air.
Alternatively, many airlines also offer flights from several gateways in North and South America to Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula, Honduras’ main cities. From either of those large international airports, you're just a hop away from the island via several small domestic airlines such as CM Airlines or SOSA. There is also the large and comfortable passenger ferry by Safeway Maritime that operates daily from La Ceiba.
