If you're taking a Western Caribbean cruise to Isla Roatan, we look forward to welcoming you to our beautiful island home! We are confident that you will enjoy your visit. Whether you've booked a shore excursion or not, you are likely to have plenty of time to explore the island. Here are some tips for a Roatan one-day itinerary for cruise ship visitors.
Organized Shore Excursions
If you book a shore excursion through your cruise ship, you will be picked up directly by the tour operator at the port. There are two ports in Roatan: Mahogany Bay and Port of Roatan. Both will allow verified tour operators to collect guests at the pier to escort them to their mode of transportation.
There are countless options to choose from for Roatan shore excursions, from swimming with dolphins to snorkeling to catamaran sailing to zipline canopy tours to island tours and more. Any of these must be booked through your cruise ship.
Taxis for Hire
If you're more inclined to skip the planning and just wing it once you've arrived, there are verified taxis at both ports in Roatan. You can hire a taxi to take you around for the day, or to just one specific location. If you've done your own research, just tell the driver where you want to go.
If you're open to suggestions, ask the driver to show you around and tell you about the island. Most taxi drivers will have favorite spots to show you and local places to highlight. Fares are basically set dependent upon your destination or tour, but be sure you verify costs before leaving the port.
Beaches and Snorkeling
There are multiple beaches you could check out during your one-day visit to Roatan. The Port of Roatan is located in Coxen Hole, so beaches on the western side of Roatan are a shorter drive from the port. Mahogany Bay is more centrally located near French Harbour, so you could head in either direction to find a beautiful beach to enjoy.
If you want to snorkel, your best bet is the western beaches for easy and safe access to coral reef from shore. Otherwise, pay for a snorkel excursion to go out by boat so you do not swim through boat lanes or otherwise put yourself in danger.
Scuba Diving During a Cruise
If you want to scuba dive - or try diving for the first time - you can certainly do that in a Roatan one-day itinerary. Whether you book through a shore excursion or privately, you absolutely should book scuba diving in advance. Showing up at a dive shop without a confirmed reservation when your schedule is so restrictive will likely end in disappointment.
Taking an island tour is an excellent way to see more of Roatan. With only one day to visit, an island tour shows you the highlights of our history and culture, plus the stunning natural beauty that Roatan boasts.
