There are multiple cruise lines that visit the island of Roatan. Our two ports, Mahogany Bay and the Port of Roatan, host thousands of cruise ship passengers for one-day visits throughout the year. If you're visiting us in the Bay Islands of Honduras, there are a few things to keep in mind to make the most of your visit. Here is our advice for a Roatan cruise stop.
Roatan Cruise Ports
Know which port your ship will dock at. Mahogany Bay is owned by Carnival Corporation, so all Carnival, Princess, Holland America, Regent Seven Seas, and Oceania ships dock there. Additionally, Costa Cruises, Thomson Cruises, and P&O Cruises all dock at Mahogany Bay. These companies might dock at the Port of Roatan during strong windy weather when entering Mahogany Bay is unsafe. The Port of Roatan offers more space to anchor and tender guests to shore and is located in the capital of Coxen Hole.
If you’re coming to Roatan on Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, Norwegian Cruise Lines, or Celebrity Cruises, you will dock at the Port of Roatan.
Advice for a Roatan Cruise Stop
If you're booking your day in advance, all bookings should be made before you board your cruise ship. The internet access onboard is not reliable enough for you to make your necessary contacts after you depart. Without confirmation in advance, you could miss out on an activity you really want to do! Many organized shore excursions will sell out well in advance, so be sure to book as early as you can.
The drive from Mahogany Bay to West Bay Beach is about 40 minutes - keep that in mind with your one-day itinerary planning!
If you do not book a shore excursion through your cruise ship, you are responsible for returning to the ship on time. They will not wait for you, so be sure to schedule plenty of time to return to port and board the ship.
Some cruise ships operate on ship time - not local time. If you book your own activities for the day, especially if it's scuba diving where the schedule is fixed, you MUST note whether your ship is on local or ship time. This will impact your actual arrival time in Roatan. Don't be surprised if a dive shop isn't open at 6am when you think it's 8am according to the ship!
The Port of Roatan is located in Coxen Hole, which is the capital of the Bay Islands Department. As the capital, it is more commercial than touristy. You'll see lots of shops, government offices, banks, grocery stores, and even two of our island's multiple medical centers. This isn't a typical tourist stop as there are few tourism operators in this area.
Mahogany Bay is designed to offer all your amenities right the port. There is a manufactured beach with bars and restaurants, multiple activities on-site, and lots of shopping including international jewelers and even a Harley Davidson shop. There is also a local artisan market filled with Honduran crafts and wares!
